What Is Ectopic Pregnancy? Can It Be Cured With TCM?

Acupuncture, australia, Chinese Medicine, health, Uncategorized

An ectopic pregnancy generally occurs when a fertilised egg fails to implant normally within the uterus, and begins to develop somewhere else inside the abdomen, most commonly in one of the Fallopian tubes. This type of pregnancy can result in serious complications such as intra-abdominal haemorrhage, which occurs due to expansion and rupture of the Fallopian tube caused by the growing embryo.

Ectopic pregnancies can be caused due to several reasons:

  • Kinks or obstructions existing in Fallopian tubes from previous infections
  • Absence of adequate protective lining outside the tubes due to low mucus production or excessive mucus thinning caused by progesterone
  • Mucus plugs

The inner walls of Fallopian tubes have a lining of special secretions meant for nourishing the embryo as well as facilitating its passage into the uterus. Under normal conditions, sufficient quantity of mucus coats the Fallopian tubes until about two days after ovulation. During that time, the progesterone levels increase and make the mucus disappear. If the fertilised egg is still in the tube after the mucus has thinned, it increases the chances of ectopic pregnancy. In the context of Traditional Chinese Medicine, this scenario corresponds to blood and Qi stagnation. The common symptoms of the scenario include breast soreness, headaches and abdominal pain at midcycle.

Ectopic Pregnancy

The worst consequence of ectopic pregnancy is infertility after an emergency surgery or methotrexate injection for stopping cell growth. However, there are certain TCM pregnancy support treatments in Northern Beaches that can successfully increase fertility even after an emergency ectopic pregnancy surgery has been conducted. University researches have concluded that acupuncture administered in combination with Chinese herbal medicine can effectively enhance tubal patency by reducing the size of obstructions in the Fallopian tubes.

In order to counteract the adverse consequences of ectopic pregnancy and surgery, acupuncturists make use of various acupoints like Zhongji, Guilai, Shuidao, Sanyinjiao and Zigong. They also claim that employing sterilised warm needles for administering acupuncture treatment in the second week after the emergency surgery can boost fertility by alleviating the complications of chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, a condition often responsible for fallopian tube obstructions and inflammation.

An acupuncture session meant for reducing chances of infertility after ectopic surgery usually lasts for about 30 minutes. In addition to that, practitioners often prescribe various herbs such as Dan Shen, Tao Ren, Chi Shao, San Leng, Tian Hua Fen, Gan Cao and E Zhu to the patient.

Pregnancy Exhaustion

Exhaustion during the first trimester and also other stages of the gestation period is not a problem affecting only women going through pregnancy in Northern Beaches, but also expectant mothers all over the world. However, the feeling of tiredness can sometimes be excessive and this usually must be taken as a message from the body that it needs to rest. Pregnancy exhaustion can be due to the impact of a single or a combination of various factors. According to doctors and physicians, some of the most common reasons are as follows:

  • Deficiency of nutrients like iron, B12, magnesium, iodine, vitamin D and zinc.
  • Improper digestion resulting in vomiting, nausea, bloating, acid reflux, flatulence and irregular bowel movement.
  • Sleep disorders caused by hormonal imbalance, hunger, urge to urinate several times, anxiety, etc.
  • Different types of body pain such as neck pain, backache, headaches, pubic symphysis pain and leg cramps.
  • Stress and bouts of depression

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, pregnancy exhaustion is actually the result of yin or yang deficiency, stagnation of qi or poor blood circulation. If the presence of qi is too low, it can also trigger fatigueness during pregnancy. Acupuncturists often suggest that the best remedy for improving the quantity of qi is to focus primarily on a healthy diet consisting of slow-cooked meat, soups and stews. This can also help to eliminate such complications as constipation, hemorrhoids, diarrhoea, insomnia and nausea. It is better to strike out cold, sugary or raw foods from the diet chart.

There are two specific acupuncture points, located about 4 centimetres below each of the knees, which can help to build up energy for regulating and restoring digestion. One can even get moxibustion done over the points by a reputed acupuncturist.

Pregnancy has a natural tendency of taking tolls on the mother’s health in various forms. Nutrients present inside the body of a pregnant woman are leached by her baby. Traditional Chinese Medicine ascertains that Chinese herbal medicine in conjunction with meditation and a diet comprising adequate amount of meat can replenish the deficiency of nutrients created.

Acupuncture sessions during pregnancy can help to remove the qi stagnation, which is also one of the reasons for prenatal exhaustion. Removal of qi stagnation can result in elimination of various complications such as irritability, anxiety, depression, headaches, migraines, nausea, pain, morning sickness, pre-eclampsia, cholestasis, improper blood circulation in the placenta and deep vein thrombosis after birth. The therapy of acupuncture can be combined with prenatal yoga for improving the overall health of the mother.

Acupuncture May Help Relieve Hot Flushes Among Menopausal Women

Acupuncture, australia, Chinese Medicine, health, Medicine, miscellaneous

Hot flushes, also called hot flashes, are sudden feeling of heat over body parts or all over the body. They can even cause redness on neck and face, red blotches on back, arms and chest, and cold shivers and heavy sweating. A lot of health conditions may cause hot flushes. However, they are very common among women who are undergoing a menopausal phase.

A very effective treatment for the hot flushes include hormone therapy- the use of medication, which contains progesterone or estrogen. But such a treatment may increase the risk of health conditions like heart disease, stroke & cancer.

The researchers in Northern Beaches, Sydney, wanted to know how acupuncture affected the severity and regularity of hot flushes, which a woman generally experiences when undergoing the natural menopausal phase.

Acupuncture is after all a form of alternative medicine, which is more than 3000 years old. It incorporates the number of processes, which stimulate the anatomical points on body as form if healing. A very common form of acupuncture involves use of metallic, thin needles, which penetrate into the skin. This technique is mainly used to help treat the chronic pain. However, past research has shown it can even reduce the inflammation and can boost weight loss.

The research that was conducted recently assessed acupuncture’s effectiveness. The women who were included in the research work underwent different forms of acupuncture like laser acupuncture, acupressure, ear acupuncture, electroacupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture.

The researchers found out that women who went through acupuncture experienced reduction in severity & frequency of the hot flushes for up to three months. Moreover, the treatment seemed to have a beneficial effect on the hot flushes irrespective of the number of sessions, doses or duration of treatment received. But the researchers have noted that the sham acupuncture reduced frequency of the hot flushes as much as a true acupuncture in women who were undergoing the stage of menopause in Northern Beaches.

However, the researchers were unable to explain why this therapeutic treatment helped relieve hot flushes among the menopausal women. They only hypothesize that acupuncture can trigger a reduction in concentration of a neuropeptide that’s found in cells of peripheral and central nervous system (beta-endorphin)-in hypothalamus of brain. According to them, the lower levels of these neuropeptide can activate release of the calcitonin gene-related peptide that regulates the temperature of the body.
